The Sacra di San Michele, sometimes known as Saint Michael's Abbey, is a religious complex on Mount Pirchiriano, situated on the south side of the Val di Susa in the territory of the municipality of Sant'Ambrogio di Torino, in the Metropolitan City of Turin, Piedmont region of northwestern Italy.
I think the cool thing about places like that - really beautiful and special - is that someone said, "You know, we should build a massive building on that rocky crag!" And then had the will, leadership and resources to make it happen, back in the day when logistics were a bit more dicey!
I think one had better have some serious religious beliefs and central heat to live there. I don't see a lot of trees for fire wood and I don't thing they deliver coal up there. Looks pretty chilly to me. But the scenery is awesome.
