Student could've also rounded up to 105-30=75. Only 70 when rounded down. So by rounding both values would've been correct. But that's too easy.
olds mo williamAnonymousnoreply@blogger.comtag:blogger.com,1999:blog-4533651942397782565.post-59858193893491369692019-05-15T13:47:33.551-07:002019-05-15T13:47:33.551-07:00Hmmm. When I was studying physics at Uni, the head...Hmmm. When I was studying physics at Uni, the head of the dept. was upset because so many students were way out of the ballpark when submitting problem assignments. It's like they were adding 2+2 and getting 1,631 or -512; it should have been obvious that something wasn't right. Some students were submitting work which seemed ludicrous to the instructors, the answers were so far off from what they expected to see.

As a result we all got additional work in estimating what an answer should be, and that may have been the point of this question. It's not asking what the correct answer is, but whether this answer is reasonable, something that could be expected; so this might be a problem in estimation instead of pure math.

Mind you, I'm not defending Common Core, that monstrosity needs to be abolished! But perhaps there's more to this than meets the eye!Eskymanhttps://www.blogger.com/profile/15947922645001422523noreply@blogger.comtag:blogger.com,1999:blog-4533651942397782565.post-7149139454753552392019-05-15T07:22:00.001-07:002019-05-15T07:22:00.001-07:00Apparently, that's good enough for grubbermint...Apparently, that's good enough for grubbermint work, and precisely why we lose.Ace Rimmerhttps://www.blogger.com/profile/03375429828210840368noreply@blogger.comtag:blogger.com,1999:blog-4533651942397782565.post-66082945344179410022019-05-14T18:02:54.440-07:002019-05-14T18:02:54.440-07:00No, but that's Common Core for you, because 10...No, but that's Common Core for you, because 100-30 is soooo much easier than 103-28.

Hear that sound?
