McDonald’s is serving fried apple pie again for America’s 250th birthday

Even now, I can still remember the taste of these.  And the filling was always so hot it would boil your tongue if you didn't let it cool.

The company said Tuesday it’s bringing back fried apple pies for the first time in more than three decades. They’ll be available at most U.S. restaurants for a limited time starting June 23.

McDonald’s is one of several fast-food companies offering semiquincentennial treats. Burger King recently debuted its Firecracker Cookie Pie, which has a sugar cookie crust and red, white and blue star-shaped sprinkles. Sonic is offering a red, white and blue slush float for $2.50. Hardee’s has an iced Star-Spangled Biscuit with red and blue sprinkles.

  1. Their fried pies were outstanding. I remember making them and the cherry pies. 20 minutes in 350F lard and then 20 minutes minimum before going into the warming display rack.

  2. I was frying those things at McDonalds on July 4, 1976. I liked the cherry better.

  5. Some places would fry the pies in the same oil they used for fries and fish filets.

  6. Hotter than the surface of the sun. Holy moly, my tongue just went into hiding.

  8. First and only time I ate one, it peeled the skin off the roof of my mouth and fried my tongue. There's really no reason for them to be served at the temperature of the sun.

  9. We didn't have a McDonald's in my hometown when I was in high school, but we had a Jack-in-the-Box. I worked there my junior year, and they had big, half-moon shaped apple and lemon pies. I fried a lot of those, and ate far more than my share of apple pies.

I did get to eat at McDonald's once in a while when I drove to Conroe, and I remember their delicious fried pies and the lava-hot filling.

  10. They stopped making them?
I haven't been there in eons.

  11. I worked at McDonald's 42 years ago. If (when) I forget to set the timer on the fryer, the pie would cook until they burst. I can still hear the sound of pie filling exploding in the deep fat fryer...

  13. It would be good with a soft serve ice-cream on it. Reckon they will have the machine up and running by the 4th
