And what country can preserve its liberties if their rulers are not warned from time to time that their people preserve the spirit of resistance? Let them take arms. The remedy is to set them right as to facts, pardon and pacify them. What signify a few lives lost in a century or two? Ah- a play on American Gothic, by Grant Wood. Some years ago wife & I did that but with her in approx ver of dress, & me in shirt/coat/glasses close to orig, for Halloween contest. We won, but many had no idea. Zsazsa & Eddie pull it off w Levi & Brooks Bros, but it totally works. She was something.
On September 9, 1942, Albert enlisted in the United States Coast Guard and was discharged in 1943 to accept an appointment as a lieutenant in the U.S. Naval Reserve.
He was awarded the Bronze Star with Combat "V" for his actions during the invasion of Tarawa in November 1943, when, as the coxswain of a U.S. Navy landing craft, he rescued 47 Marines who were stranded offshore (and supervised the rescue of 30 others), while under heavy enemy machine-gun fire. "
...at the bloody Battle of Tarawa in the South Pacific, he found and rescued wounded soldiers who had been abandoned under heavy fire, transporting them to troop ships for treatment.
Estimates credit him with pulling 70 men to safety."

When an uncle died we found a Bronze Star in his effects. Total surprise to family. He told us kids of his experiences in WW2 in the navy many times but he never mentioned the Bronze Star. He told us of being torpedoed by a German Sub off the coast of Africa and his being on a ship sunk by a German aircraft during the invasion of Sicily. He also told us of his nearly being sunk in Halsey's Typhoon and then after the war ferrying Jap troops from China to Japan, a mission that went on for months on end. We had no clue that he was a hero.
