That position might already be first or reverse. If not, I'd cut that shifter down and reposition the knob aft. Seen it done as an extention for a VW bus to make it more useable for humans. This was before ergonomics was kool.
It looks like a Gullwing dash, stripped of unnecessary chrome but I've seen two Gullwings up close and the shifter is dainty and in line with the front edge of the seat. Perhaps the transmission has been upgraded to a toploader style and the bent shift lever was necessary. The SLShop in England offers a six speed transmission kit for a mere £23,000 plus shipping.
