    Trivia: the spreading center was first discovered when Matthew Fontaine Maury was hired to route the first undersea telephone cables from North America to the UK.

    A hero of mine, the biography of Maury is compelling.

  6. I had an opportunity to snorkel at Silfra on Iceland a few years back. In spite of the uniqueness of the area in which you can simultaneously touch the EuroAsian and North American plates I didn’t partake. I’m a warm water guy and even in a dry suit it’s a no go. ;)
