Technology must progress; when we entered WW2, we were getting killed by the Japanese Zero until planes such as the P38, Hellcat, Corsair, and Mustang were part of our arsenal. But we must also be diligent with such development budgets
Don't disagree, so maybe perhaps the platform itself isn't a waste... but VTOL is a completely useless fucking carrot to chase. The compromises made to satisfy one miniscule perceived 'need' is just retarded.
Can't imaging that jet blast does a tarmac or carrier deck any good! Back in the day, F-4's, F-1's5 and F-16's departing USAF bases in Germany had a restricted departure angle for exactly that reason.
Since when did an STOL/VTOL aircraft have an impact on air superiority or ground attack that conventional aircraft couldn't be employed in?
I can only think of the Falklands war. One out of hundreds of brush fires since WWII. The British wouldn't have needed them if they used steam catapults on their aircraft carriers instead of those recockulous ski jumps.
This is some General's wet dream of an aircraft to accomplish missions that most any other aircraft in the arsenal could accomplish or that same General's dream of "keeping up with the RAF", both stupid ideas, IMHO.
