Missing toddler who walked 7 miles alone through Arizona wilderness led to safety by rancher's dog The rancher traced the boy’s steps and discovered that Buford, an Anatolian Pyrenees who normally patrols his land and wards off coyotes, had escorted the 2-year-old for at least a mile.

Not just any dog, but a Pyrenees.  I've had a passing experience with this breed, and they are extremely intelligent.  About two short steps from asking for the keys to the car and driving away all by themselves.

Dunton said of Buford, "He loves kids, and I imagine he wouldn't leave him once he'd found him."

This dog absolutely took it on himself to bring that lost boy home safe.  What a story!

  1. Thats just the sweetest story, dawgs truly are man's bestest friends, everywhere you look dawgs do just amazing things, and do so unconditionally, thats love and caring, seems an innate aspect of our thousands of years of close association. I think one day this bond will evolve till Dawgs and Men thrive as one.

  6. That might be the most heart-warming story in the last month. Not just a good dog, a wonderful dog.

  9. I saw where one unhinged woman state that the rancher should be investigated because the story was simply unbelievable. The rancher must have been up to no good.

    1. That woman fails to understand the breed. If she showed up and tried anything stupid with that child (or pretty much any child,) she would unfortunately find out just what the breed is capable of when they protect children.
Knowing what the Pyrenees breed is like, I am not surprised this toddler was protected by him.

  12. Dogs are your best friend no matter what. Lock your dog and wife in the car trunk for two hours. Who's the happiest to see you when you open the trunk?

  13. We have two Great Pyrenees, four year old Jupiter, and his year and a half old daughter, Lilyanya. Jupiter is the gentlemen supreme of dogs, unless you are a coyote. Then he will erase you.

Lily is, at a year and a half old, something of a Big Galoot, but I am told she will grow out of it.

We have a cougar that lives on property, way back in the woods, that we call Charlie. Charlie has never caused us any problems, he must be content with squirrels, possums, woodchucks, and the occasional deer. But Lily was with me, the night that we went outside to find out what was causing her father to bark like a maniac. Right across the road stood Charlie. I told her to get behind me, as I was the one with the rifle, but she insisted on staying between me and him, as we backed off, and went back in the house.
So I make sure that every Tuesday, she gets a grilled cheese sandwich, her favorite snack.
