And what country can preserve its liberties if their rulers are not warned from time to time that their people preserve the spirit of resistance? Let them take arms. The remedy is to set them right as to facts, pardon and pacify them. What signify a few lives lost in a century or two? The tree of liberty must be refreshed from time to time with the blood of patriots and tyrants.

If the ice crystals in the atmosphere align just right, you get light columns.
When he puts his collective mind to it, mankind can create beautiful works of art, but will always be upstaged by what just "happens" in nature. Was never aware of these "columns." Beautful photo. Thanks for the post CW! Learned something new today!
Not sure if these are phenomenologically related to sun dogs that I see occasionally here in Northern AZ. I've been interested in lots of optical atmospheric visual effects for the past 40 years, but these have eluded me.
