And what country can preserve its liberties if their rulers are not warned from time to time that their people preserve the spirit of resistance? Let them take arms. The remedy is to set them right as to facts, pardon and pacify them. What signify a few lives lost in a century or two? The tree of liberty must be refreshed from time to time with the blood of patriots and tyrants.

Elmo brought up this intersection the other day in the comments. The east side of the Sierra is a very interesting place.
In the rocky canyon just before popping out into the above valley.
Looking the opposite direction from that top photo, you look up a crack in the mountains https://www.aaroads.com/california/images089/ca-089_nb_monitor_pass_003.jpg
and say to yourself "This road can't possibly go anywhere interesting". Then as you continue onward you're in for a surprise as you discover a fantastic pass over the Sierra with some of the most expansive views of the mountains to be seen anywhere. It's literally breathtaking.
I always look forward to this valley. It seems to be just hanging there. When it is fully green, it looks like a green woolen blanket. My next fun drive to Las Vegas I think I'll try to find some sort of road into it. I'd love to learn more about this place. Off to the search engine!
Be safe in that rain, CW. Had some roofing done recently and hope it passes this test Goetz von Berlichingen (Pine Grove)
5 to 7 inches out of this storm. The big rigs are already parked end to end on the shoulder of I-5 through town, cause the road north to Oregon is closed, for now.
I met my wife at UCLA in the mid 70s. After that we got married in LA and drove up US395 to Lake Tahoe where we spent two weeks on the Lake in a Condo. This was June 79 and we won good in Nevada so total cost was $3. The drive was great as there was not many on the route and the view was good.

DeleteA magnificent ride on a motorcycle. The smell of the sage as you fall into the desert is intoxicating...
ReplyDeleteAmen, Jeff, so true.

ReplyDeleteAnywhere along 395 is a whole different California than what most people think of.
