And what country can preserve its liberties if their rulers are not warned from time to time that their people preserve the spirit of resistance? Let them take arms. The remedy is to set them right as to facts, pardon and pacify them. What signify a few lives lost in a century or two? The tree of liberty must be refreshed from time to time with the blood of patriots and tyrants.

Ball turret from B-17 Flying Fortress 42-30246 of the 570th BS 390th BG drops towards the sea after being jettisoned in preparation for a forced landing on September 21st, 1943
And you know, when the pic was first published, some Navy dude was b.s.ing people in a bar afterwards, and telling them he was the ball turret gunner on the U.S.S. Codfish.
Fuel tanks ruptured by flak, 'Spot Remover' diverted towards Sweden. The crew was dismayed that they had landed in (German occupied) Denmark. All ten crew were captured to become POWs.
Four of the crew escaped capture for several days. But a trail of orange peels led the Germans to their capture.
Hope they got the gunner out first.
ReplyDeletePfc Skippy, sitting in the turret, was not amused.

Delete"Tail Numbers"; telling pretty much "the rest of the story"! Amazing.
ReplyDeleteWhat, none of the crew could draw big yellow tires?
