They start out a...Agree that it is a crimped blank. They start out at almost the full length of a live round so that they function properly and then only open up 1/2 to 3/4 of the way when fired. As many of us know a blank does not have enough powder to make a real 'bang' and not nearly enough to cycle the bolt without a BFA.
