The Sacra di San Michele, sometimes known as Saint Michael's Abbey, is a religious complex on Mount Pirchiriano, situated on the south side of the Val di Susa in the territory of the municipality of Sant'Ambrogio di Torino, in the Metropolitan City of Turin, Piedmont region of northwestern Italy.

Amazing that such places exist.  Looks like something out of the LOTR.

  1. I think the cool thing about places like that - really beautiful and special - is that someone said, "You know, we should build a massive building on that rocky crag!" And then had the will, leadership and resources to make it happen, back in the day when logistics were a bit more dicey!

    1. No kidding. Whoever it was probably made all the serfs living in that valley donate a months labor every year until complete.

    2. I wonder how many people died making it?

  2. I think one had better have some serious religious beliefs and central heat to live there. I don't see a lot of trees for fire wood and I don't thing they deliver coal up there. Looks pretty chilly to me. But the scenery is awesome.
