Pan Am Stratocruiser

  1. My dad worked for Pan Am in the late 40's and early 50's. I took many flights in one of these beauties. We use to ferry them from NY's Idewild (now JFK) to Miami where Pan Am had a major Rotary engine overhaul facility. A great aircraft who's career was cut short by the advent of the jet engine.

  2. If I remember correctly the Stratocruiser was a post war adaptation of the B-29.

  3. Jets had a lot less maintenance because of the lack of vibration. cheaper fuels. longer TBO on engines. fewer parts to fail. customers satisfaction. faster. cleaner on the ground(engine oil dripping off of everything) easier to service. lots of different reasons including profitability.
but By GOD what a ride!
