It was noted earlier by Rich that the F105 Thunderchief was famous for how much damage it could absorb

I managed to find this picture.  I'm sure there's better out there.

Bonus shots of the Thud.

  1. When I was about 8 or 9 we lived not far from McGuire AFB (1966 or 67). I was in the pine woods behind our house when I looked up to see an F105 rolling over at treetop level moving at just below The SSL. I'll never forget the bright green canopy panel and the bright electric blue and white stars markings on the leading edge just behind the intake. The pilot was looking down at me and laughing. He was so low that he bent the pine trees over in his wake, and I could smell the JP-4 burning. The sound from his full afterburner made my head ring for days.

  2. The last time I saw one flying was in 1977 at Richmond, Va. The Air Guard was still flying the venerable old birds, one of my favorites....all of the century series were classics....I remember in the early 70's the Puerto Rico Air Guard flying F-104s.....they called them "Los Banditos"....
