Things that are fun to know

  1. There are a lot more Amish in Florida than 125. Especially when the snow starts falling. There are whole retirement communities for them down here, but their 'legal' residences are usually listed as the old home in the north.

  3. Percentage wise, this is the most rapidly growing minority in the US. The Columbus Dispatch reviewed their farming methods a number of years ago and found that Amish farms were the most profitable farms, BECAUSE they did not use machinery, nor fuel, nor synthetic fertilizers, nor electricity, nor did they borrow money. Theirs are true family farms, with all labor family labor and unpaid. Major farm construction projects are community efforts, and Amish rely on one another for all sorts of things.

The are pacifists. They generally do not admit their children to be full members of their churches until the children become adults. Their children seldom complete high school. They learn trades, all all the fine carpentry and masonry done here in north central Ohio is Amish work.

    They pity us "English."

  5. Have a relative that had an Amish neighbor in Michigan. The relative decided to move back south listed his house and 52 acre of land . His Amish neighbor bought his draft horses 4 of them for top dollar never dickered or flinched. 3 months go by and no takers on the house. The Amish neighbor asks what he would take for the 50 acres of farm and woodland No house or garage as they were English. He wanted land for his son. Floyd told bottom dollar because he had the horses and was a good neighbor 250,000. The Amish man said he had to speak with the elders but should have the money in 2 days did Floyd want cash or Bank draft? The house sold 3 weeks later without the property. The amish son payed the father and elders back in 5 years plus built an Amish home and barn.

  6. What a pity that California isn't being invaded by the Amish. It also appears from the map that none of CA's problems can be blamed on them, either!
