The folks used to take my sister and I to a local Sambo's restaurant for breakfast all the time.

That was late 60's or early 70's.  They had pretty darn good pancakes, and absolutely no sense of political correctness.

  1. The owner's nick-name really WAS "Sambo," but "righteous" blacks (and whites) didn't care.

  2. They still have one store open in Santa Barbara on the beach
near Stearns Wharf. The walls are still filled with images
    of Sambo and the tiger!

  3. I recall going to Sambo's as well and it's just now that you mention it that I don't recall seeing them around anymore. I don't recall it being a place based on race - as you suggest, just good pancakes and breakfast.

  4. I was travelling through Ohio to a customer's plant with our sales rep back in about 1977. We stopped for dinner at a Sambo's and I saw bacon cheeseburger on the menu. What? Bacon on a burger? I was intrigued. Never had I heard of anything like that in my life. Oh, my goodness. I was in such a state of bliss that I never noticed if there was any racist bric a brac anywhere in the place.............

  8. The green two door in the foreground appears to be a Chevy Vega which was introduced as a 1970 model. The Olds sedan behind it could be a '69, '70 or '71.

  11. I remember Grammaw and Grampaw reading that book to me in Owensboro, Kentucky when I was little, and showing me the pictures.

Little black Sambo may have been black, but he was not a Negro, because tigers are in India, not Africa.

I just googled "Little Black Sambo", and the book can still be purchased at the Amazon web site, and there are cartoons posted at the You Tube web site.

  12. Back in the good old days. Everything sucks now. We could pull in to the feed store and get a 50 pound box of dynamite a tin of caps and a roll of fuse and head up to the 40 and blast stumps. Now people shit there pants if they hear a car backfire . Everything sucks.

  13. I've got one of their coffee cups.

I don't see any cars there that would be driven by a liberal.

  14. I can remember when the first change was written.
    Sambo became "brave."
I'm thinking than should've been enough.
30+ years ago there were two Sambo's in Redding.
The restaurants are still there, one Mexican, the other is still a coffee shop.
