In Brazil, there's an apartment building with a 40 storey spiral staircase attached to the outside meant as a fire escape (xpost r/evilbuildings)

  1. There was a hideous skyscraper fire in Brazil 30 plus years ago. People remember.

  2. I think I'd rather leap from the building than take the staircase, likely made of pot metal given that it's Brazil, it would buckle when I was half way down.

  3. Why didn't they just make it a giant slide? For a hasty exit, gravity is your friend. Plus, it keeps the riffraff from using an exit as an entrance.

    1. That was my first thought, but it's probably a liability issue. Easy to get hit by someone sliding down from above just as you're entering it. Plus I can see kids (and many grown-ups!) sliding down it on a regular basis just for fun:-).

  4. If I lived near the top of that building- I'd have a parachute.

    Seriously.
