Boeing P26A Peashooter. Got to hand crank the motor to start it, like a Model T Ford.

  1. What a cutie. The term, Built like a brick shithouse comes to mind. Triple everything. For the pilots who don't want anything to go wrong, ever.

  2. Not exactly like a Model T, the Peashooter had an inertial starter. The cranking you see going on gets a heavy flywheel spinning, and then the flywheel is clutched into the engine to get the engine started.

My father was a draftee during the Second World War and spent some time at Randolph Field Texas. I had seen the cranking on some movie and he gave me a detailed explanation.

The internet explains it at length.
