One odd duck

The desire to arm all three flying branches with a common aircraft was another deciding factor in the selection of the F4 Phantom....from pure interceptor/dog fighter roll, there really was no comparison....in the end, it took multiple aircraft in Viet Nam to fill all the demands anyway, with the Sky Raider indicating the need for a plane like the A-10 Warthog....Tough, slow, maneuverable, with tremendous armament and loitering capability for tank destruction and support for ground troops....
