And what country can preserve its liberties if their rulers are not warned from time to time that their people preserve the spirit of resistance? Let them take arms. The remedy is to set them right as to facts, pardon and pacify them. What signify a few lives lost in a century or two? The tree of liberty must be refreshed from time to time with the blood of patriots and tyrants.
Oh sure, astronomers and physicists may say the supermoon isn’t all that super, but they’re party poopers. Everyone else looked to the sky with awe, and photographers the world over made amazing images of a moon that hasn’t looked so big or bright since 1948.
To quickly recap the science, the moon follows an elliptical orbit that places it between 362,600 km to 405,400 kilometers away from Earth. Monday marked the moon’s closest approach to Earth—just 216,000 miles away. And it happened to be full. That made it appear as much as 14 percent bigger and about 30 percent brighter than normal. Further adding to the supermoon’s superness, it veered closest to Earth within hours of becoming full. NASA says the moon won’t look this big again until 2034.
