And what country can preserve its liberties if their rulers are not warned from time to time that their people preserve the spirit of resistance? Let them take arms. The remedy is to set them right as to facts, pardon and pacify them. What signify a few lives lost in a century or two? The tree of liberty must be refreshed from time to time with the blood of patriots and tyrants.
Man I'd like to get one of those Scout IIs, or maybe an FJ 60. But like all the older straight axle 4X4s they are getting scarce and pricey. I prefer a vehicle large enough to sleep in once I've got where I'm going. A couple years ago I sold my trusty '71 K20 Suburban. These days I'm driving a Vanagon AWD Syncro (also scarce and pricey.) It is proving to be an excellent vacation rig. Doesn't like headwinds, but quite capable off road- Check out some YT videos, you might be surprised.
Your thinking is exactly correct. That particular Scout just sold last year. I was pals with the guy who had it, and he camped with it all the time. A truck you can work on yourself. Modern stuff, not so much.
Power Wagons, hey? I had two buddies who owned Dodge Carryall/WCs. We put a 318 in one, definitely better than the tired old 6. The other had a slow and smoky 6, but the hand-applied flame job looked tuff. (The glass pack did little for performance but the price was right. They were both slow, rattly and leaky, and the brakes were marginal especially when wet. I doubt we had much more than a grand in either of those trucks. Fond memories from long ago... In the meantime I had quite a few different trucks: CJ 5, FJ40, two Chevy Panels, a couple of Suburbans, even an IHC Travelall. The prettiest was the '56 Chevy Panel. The best was the '66 K10 Sub, and I had the trusty '71 for over 25 years. Never owned a Scout, Bronco, FJ 45 or 60, Wagoneer or Defender, but they have crossed my mind. The current VW is quite a departure for me, with an entirely different build philosophy. But it seems reasonable compared to some projects I have considered. (I have coveted a Sugga and a C303.) Someday I'd like to do a resto-mod '56 Suburban on modern chassis/running gear. But I digress.
It's the Applegate-Lassen trail in High Rock Canyon in NW Nevada. Those are actual wagon wheel ruts. I was on this trip and took this picture of my brother's rig. Thanks for sharing a wonderful memory! P.D. P.D.
