  2. Well, not a hundred years - although what was left to homestead was mostly Northern bush. But until even very recently paying a $10 fee then "proving up" a homestead by cultivating at least 40 acres and erecting a habitable dwelling would give you "free" title to a quarter section (160 acres). Knew an enterprising fellow who spent three summers with a chain saw carving himself out a very respectable fishing camp this way, although I don't think his 40 acres under cultivation was what the Act really had in mind, and there never was a forth summer's crop ...
