Winding Down, oil by Bill Anton

  1. This is very much like the place where I grew up.

We had varying numbers of horses. The fewest I recall was 4 and the most was 12. Of the 12, 2 were boarded for other people.

Growing up like that is a lot of work, but there is a payoff in terms of character. At least I narcissistically think so. I recall that some of the people I knew thought I was spoiled because we moved from heating water on a coal stove to a genuine water heater. Imagine that, a hot shower was considered pampered. I guess it is from an Indian Brave perspective. Still, the hot shower would be difficult to give up.

    1. Half the population would promptly die if they couldn't turn a tap and get hot water.

    2. Most of them wouldn't drink milk from a cow's (or a mare's) teat.
