Aurora Australis over Western Australia

Colin Legg of Colin Legg Photography captured this fantastic image of a pink aurora with green airglow over Albany, Western Australia, at 18:50 UT Jan 1 2014. The Large Magellanic Cloud and the Small Magellanic Cloud can be seen to the right of the Milky Way in the image.

Legg reports that the aurora was at Kp4 level: ‘quite moderate and surprising to see at 35S latitude’. Legg used a Canon 6D with a Nikon 14-24 lens @ 14 mm; ISO 6400, f/2.8, exposure 20 seconds.
