The new Tesla Model X, looking good.
But, will it go more than 35 miles on a charge? And judging from how high my electric bills have been lately, it might be way more expensive to drive than a gas car.
Which is the rub. If electric cars ever became in any way popular, the additional electricity demand would crash the grid. Remember the blackouts as recently as the Gray Davis administration, here in California? Believe it, not much has been done since to increase electric generating capacity, so these machines, while beautiful, will never hit the roads in any numbers without massive new investment in energy generation. Think dams for hydropower, nuclear power, and coal or natural gas plants everywhere, which, come to think of it, would probably be a very good thing.
